Clackamas River Ranger District staff invites neighbors and local businesses for a fun day collecting biochar created from Riverside Fire wood debris. This charcoal-like, carbon-rich product is made from burning organic materials, like wood debris, in an air curtain burner container at high temperatures with little oxygen. Biochar can improve soil health and quality by increasing its organic matter, microorganisms, and nutrients. It’s useful as a soil amendment, usually blended with other amendments like compost, grass clippings, and manure. The available biochar was produced from wood waste from hazard trees and slash from the 2020 and 2021 wildfires.
