Mt. Hood Territory’s Marvelous Modes Of Transportation

What do a vertical street, a water trail and a vintage trolley all have in common?

They constitute just a few of the fun and interesting modes of transportation available in Mt. Hood Territory. Leave the car behind and add a unique twist to your exploration of the area with these special ways of getting around. You may even get a fun history lesson along the way!

Willamette Shore Trolley: A Nostalgic Ride with a View

All aboard the Willamette Shore Trolley! This vintage trolley glides on a historic rail line dating back to the late 1800s along the west shore of the Willamette River from downtown Lake Oswego to SW Portland. It makes for a leisurely 90-minute journey with beautiful nature and waterfront views. The trolley runs weekends and also hosts public and private events. Be sure to book your tickets online in advance. Trolley service resumes starting Memorial Day weekend.

Oregon City Municipal Elevator: Your Shortcut to Sky-High Views

Take a ride on the Oregon City Municipal Elevator, the only “vertical street” in North America. The elevator connects the upper and lower areas of the city, whisking you 130 feet up a bluff overlooking the Willamette River and famed Willamette Falls. It's a stop on the Heritage Trail and the perfect activity to complement your day exploring downtown Oregon City. Not only does it save your calves a workout, but the panoramic views from the top are absolutely stellar.

Mt. Hood Express: Your Ticket to Mountain Bliss

The Mt. Hood Express gets you right to the heart of the action on the mountain. This year-round shuttle is a fantastic car-free option with stops within walking distance of several attractions and hiking and biking trails between Sandy and Timberline Lodge. There’s a trailer that can carry your bike in the summer and your skis and snowboards in the winter. No need to wrestle with chains or snowy roads, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Canby Ferry: A Historic Float Across the Willamette River

Step back in time with a charming ride on the Canby Ferry. This iconic cable ferry, operational since 1914, gently carries you and your bike (or even your car!) across the scenic Willamette River. It's a quick and delightful way to connect the charming towns of Canby and Wilsonville, offering a dose of history with a side of stunning river views. While you're in the area, you'll want to check out the abundance of wonderful farms and wineries.

Willamette River to Main Streets: Paddle Your Way to Adventure

The main streets of Mt. Hood Territory don’t just overlook the Willamette River – they connect you to it. The communities of Oregon City, West Linn, Milwaukie and Lake Oswego are all within a half mile of the Willamette Water Trail. Take a break from paddling and stop off in one of these communities to experience restaurants, shops and activities by foot. eNRG Kayaking is a great option for kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals and tours on the Willamette River.

Bonus: Joyrides That Don't Need a Destination

These transportation-themed family activities may not get you very far, but they sure make for a fun time. The Molalla Train Park offers a delightful miniature railroad ride through a whimsical landscape, perfect for little ones. Pat's Acres Go Karts in nearby Canby, on the other hand, caters to the need for speed with high-octane go-kart tracks.
