The Oregon town of Boring gets a lot of flack for its name. But that name is also a source of pride for residents and sometimes a bit of publicity for the community.
The people who live there take the town's name in stride. Photographers include many spots in Boring in their list of favorite locations to shoot. That also results in them consistently replying to snarky comments on their photos telling people that the town is named for one of the original residents and not commentary about what it's like living here. Interestingly enough, descendants of that man, William H. Boring, still live in the town to this day.
Boring is not alone when it comes to cities with names that seem somewhat insulting. In fact it's been paired with some international communities graced with thesaurus-like nomenclature. It's the sister city to Dull in Scotland, as well as Bland in Australia.
Recently the online graphics company Picsart launched a campaign where they worked with three local Boring businesses to spruce up their marketing. The goal was to take their messaging from, you guessed it, boring to beautiful, or as they put it "Unboring Boring."
Honestly the videos are a lot of fun. They feature a man named Sean who visits the North American Bigfoot Center, Nutz N Boltz Theater and Boring Bean Coffee. Sean tells the story of each business and then helps them update an element of their marketing using Picsart tools.
It's a smart campaign, but it's also not the first time Boring has played center stage in a commercial campaign. Comfort Fragrance Burst sent Samsam Bubbleman to have a little fun in Boring in another bit of attempted viral marketing back in 2016.
Even when Hollywood doesn't come to call, life in Boring is good. Sure you have to endure the "Looks anything but boring to me!" comments on photos from people who think they're being original, but that tiny bit of cringe is more than worth it when you get to spend some time in a beautiful area filled with interesting people and things to do.
