Make Promontory Park Your Next Summer Estacada Getaway

Above the banks of the North Fork Reservoir in Estacada lies the recreational wonder Promontory Park. With sweeping views of the river, lush forest and a host of family friendly attractions, this Estacada getaway has all you need, whether you’re looking for tranquility or thrills.

Book a camping trip

If you want to disconnect from the outside world without completely going off the grid, camping in Estacada is the way to go. With campsites carved into hillsides and tucked among giant boulders, the Promontory Park campground is brimming with natural beauty and a hint of 1950s nostalgia. There are sites for tents and RVs, plus cabins and yomes (yurt + dome = yome!).

Campers enjoy restrooms, showers, picnic areas and electric cooking facilities. Sites have picnic tables and ample room to spread out, providing the perfect setting for cozy evenings under the starry night sky.

Know before you go: This alcohol-free campground is run by Portland General Electric. Reservations are open from mid-May to mid-September. Weekends book up fast, but going midweek has its perks.

Plunge into water activities galore

One of the park’s most stunning treasures is the North Fork Reservoir of the Clackamas River running beside it. A marina and fishing docks provide easy access to the water for boaters and anglers alike.

A convenient jaunt from the campground is the marina store. Visitors can pick up groceries, ice and fishing tackle or rent motorboats, pontoons, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for a day on the water. If you’re an angler, cast your line into the sparkling waters stocked with rainbow trout.

Make it a family affair

Promontory Park is full of fun, kid-friendly activities. Make lasting memories with the little ones at Small Fry Lake, a fishing pond for kids up to 17 years old stocked in early summer. Kids can catch two trout per day. The park also has a nature play area and plenty of space for little feet to run free.

Host a picnic in the forest

Hosting a special event? Nestled within a serene forested setting between the campground and marina, you’ll find a shelter equipped with grills, tables, electric burners and parking nearby. It’s everything you need to make merry with family and friends beneath towering trees!

Know before you go: The Promontory Park day-use picnic shelter is available by reservation only and can accommodate up to 75 people. You’ll need to fill out a day-use permit application to reserve.

Explore the surrounding area

One advantage of Promontory Park is its proximity to other great destinations. Head to nearby Milo McIver Park to go hiking, play disc golf on a world-class course or take a tour of the Clackamas Fish Hatchery to learn about the life cycle of Chinook salmon and steelhead.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, the Upper Clackamas River is one of the best whitewater rafting rivers in Oregon. Not far away is Mt. Hood National Forest, a hub for hikers, cyclists, anglers and nature enthusiasts. Be sure to take note of things you “otter do” to stay safe while exploring.

And don’t forget to stop by the quirky and fun downtown Estacada to take in small town shopping, dining and art!

Come for the excellent camping, fishing, picnicking and water play – stay for the enchanting views. No matter your style, Promontory Park has enough attractions to keep you coming back summer after summer.

Personal floatation devices, or life jackets, can save lives and in many situations are required by law. So you "otter" wear a life jacket. Life jackets are available for any boating activity and the Oregon State Marine Board has lots of information on how to choose the correct one for you and your family.
